CoolPeel vs. DEKA Peel: Which CO2 Laser Do You Actually Need?

By Maddie, Master Esthetician and Owner, Bocaba Medical Spa

Short answer: CoolPeel is for skin that looks tired, dull, or rough and needs a reset. DEKA Peel is for skin that has real lines, deeper sun damage, or scarring you want to change in a big way. Both use the same CO2 laser. The difference is how deep we go, and how much time you can take off.

This is the question I get most at consultations, so here's how I walk people through it.

First, what CO2 laser actually does

Our laser is the DEKA SmartXide Tetra. It makes thousands of tiny, controlled heat columns in your skin. Your body sees those as small injuries and responds by making new collagen, the protein that keeps skin firm and smooth. The old, damaged surface sheds, and fresher skin comes up underneath.

Every CO2 treatment works this way. What changes is the depth and density of those heat columns. Shallow and light means a quicker recovery. Deeper and denser means more downtime, and more change.

CoolPeel: the reset

CoolPeel works close to the surface. It's a good fit if you're noticing:

  • Dull or uneven tone

  • Rough texture or larger-looking pores

  • Early fine lines

  • Light sun spots

Expect to be pink and dry with some flaking for 5–7 days. Most people work from home that week and are back to normal life after it. Your skin looks brighter and smoother as it heals, and collagen keeps building for a few months after.

If you want something lighter, the Mini CoolPeel is the same idea at a gentler setting, with 3–5 days of downtime. It's a great maintenance treatment, and many clients book a series.

DEKA Peel: the bigger change

DEKA Peel goes deeper. It's the one I recommend when someone points to:

  • Wrinkles that stay when your face is relaxed

  • Crepey skin around the eyes or mouth

  • Years of sun damage

  • Acne scars or uneven texture that lighter treatments haven't touched

Plan for 7–10 days of real recovery. You'll be red, swollen, and peeling, and you'll want to stay home. In exchange, one DEKA Peel can do what several lighter treatments would.

Side by side

  • Mini CoolPeel ($425): Best for glow, maintenance, and prevention. Lightest depth. 3–5 days of downtime.

  • CoolPeel ($950): Best for dullness, texture, and early lines. Light depth. 5–7 days of downtime.

  • DEKA Peel ($1,800): Best for wrinkles, sun damage, and scarring. Deep. 7–10 days of downtime.

How to choose

Ask yourself two questions. What bothers you most when you look in the mirror? And how many days can you realistically hide out?

If it's tone and texture and you have about a week, start with CoolPeel. If it's lines and damage that have been building for years, and you can take 10 days, DEKA Peel will get you further in one session. If you can't tell, that's what the consultation is for. I'll look at your skin under good light and tell you which one I'd do on myself.

One more thing: CO2 isn't the right call for everyone. Deeper skin tones, recent tanning, or a history of cold sores all change the plan. We go over that before anything gets booked.

FAQ

Does CO2 laser hurt?

We apply numbing cream first. Most people describe it as warm prickling. DEKA Peel is more intense than CoolPeel, and we keep you as comfortable as possible.

How long do results last?

The collagen you build is yours. Your skin keeps aging, so most clients do a lighter maintenance treatment like Mini CoolPeel once or twice a year.

Can I do CO2 laser in the summer in Utah?

We can, but fall and winter are easier. Healing skin has to stay out of the sun, and Utah sun at our elevation is strong.
