RF Microneedling Downtime: What Your Skin Looks Like, Day by Day

By Maddie, Master Esthetician and Owner, Bocaba Medical Spa

Most people need 1–2 days of downtime after RF microneedling. You'll be pink, a little warm, and maybe slightly puffy. Most clients go about their normal day by day two or three. That's a big reason it's one of our most-booked treatments. You get real collagen building without hiding for a week.

Here's what to expect, so nothing surprises you.

Quick refresher: what RF microneedling does

We use the Virtue RF. Tiny insulated needles go into the skin and deliver radiofrequency energy (heat) underneath the surface. The surface stays mostly intact, so you heal fast. The deeper layer gets enough heat to tighten and rebuild collagen. That's why it helps with texture, pores, acne scars, and early laxity.

Day of treatment

You'll leave looking like you've had a sunburn. Skin feels warm and tight, a lot like after a long day outside. Some people see tiny pinpoint marks or a grid pattern. That's normal and fades fast.

What to do: go home, keep your hands off your face, and use only the products we send you home with. No makeup, no workout, no hot yoga.

Day 1

The redness drops to a light pink. Mild swelling is common, especially under the eyes and along the jaw, and it's often more noticeable when you first wake up. Sleeping with your head propped up helps.

Most clients can wear mineral makeup after 24 hours. Plenty run errands or go to work.

Day 2

For most people, this is when you look like yourself again. Skin may feel a little dry or rough, like fine sandpaper. That's the surface turning over. Keep moisturizing and don't pick or scrub.

Days 3–7

You may have light dryness or flaking. Keep your routine gentle: cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Hold off on retinol, acids, and exfoliants until we tell you it's time.

Weeks 2–12: the part you can't see

This is where the results happen. Collagen takes time to build, and it keeps building for about three months after each session. Most clients notice smoother texture and a firmer feel around weeks 4–6. The full change shows up after a series.

Quick-look timeline

  • Day of: Sunburn-pink, warm, tight. Home is best.

  • Day 1: Light pink, mild swelling. You can go out with mineral makeup.

  • Day 2: Mostly back to normal, a bit dry. Out and about.

  • Days 3–7: Possible light flaking. Out and about.

  • Weeks 4–12: Smoother, firmer skin.

How to make healing easier

  • Wear SPF every day. Utah sun is strong at our elevation, even in January.

  • Skip workouts and saunas for 24–48 hours.

  • Drink water and keep your skin moisturized. Our dry climate makes flaking more noticeable.

  • Plan it smart: book on a Thursday or Friday and you're usually presentable by Monday.

FAQ

Is RF microneedling the same as regular microneedling?

No. Regular microneedling only uses needles, and it comes with 3–5 days of downtime. RF microneedling adds heat under the skin, which gives more tightening and collagen. It usually heals faster at the surface.

How many sessions will I need?

Most people do a series of three, about 4–6 weeks apart. Acne scars and deeper laxity can take more.

What does it cost at Bocaba?

$699 for one session, or $1,799 for a series of three.
